ACCESS
In providing my students access to new opportunities and gateways, I am able to support my students in their journeys towards achieving their dreams. As I work with kindergarten and first grade students, my students' dreams are changing every day. Taking into account my students' habits, interests, strengths, and needs, I planned to provide my students with access to a number of different opportunities that would provide them with information about careers they may not have known about before, as well as life and career readiness skill development.
Nanaikapono is located on the west coast of the island of Oahu in the state of Hawai'i. Most of my students have never left the island, let alone been to "town" (the city of Honolulu, 28 miles away). Therefore, one need I recognized in my students was the ability to access experiences seeing and speaking with individuals from outside of the Nanakuli community.
My students come to me with a diverse range of needs, interests, and backgrounds. Some of my students' parents are college educated, others are not. Some of my students have technology at home, others do not. Taking into consideration what my students may or may not have been exposed to, I chose to develop a series of mini-sessions to expose my students to different ways to approach the work we are doing in my classroom.
